A little about me

Hi! I’m Emily Devine, a fourth-year journalism student at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. I’m not a chef, nor have I been to culinary school, but I do have a few years of cooking quick meals on a college budget under my belt.

I moved out of my parents’ house and into a dorm my freshman year where I spent many evenings eating macaroni and cheese or horrible cafeteria food. This was traumatic for me, because I love good food. I didn’t realize how much I’d miss my mom cooking dinner every night until I was stuck eating raw vegetables, boring pastas, or soggy sandwiches every day.

My sophomore year, I moved into an apartment with no cooks or parents. This was frightening, because I wasn’t completely sure how to feed myself. My mom decided it was time for me to learn the basics, so she spent the summer teaching me how to read a recipe, use kitchen appliances, and most importantly how to make edible food. After a few weeks of slightly odd tasting foods and an extremely messy kitchen, I started to get the hang of it and actually enjoyed cooking.

Since then, I have built a collection of easy recipes and cookbooks that I use regularly. As convenient as it is to just grab a quick meal while you’re out, it’s so much cheaper and healthier to take advantage of the stove that is just sitting in your kitchen. After all, it isn’t just there for decoration.

So, bear with me as I embark on this cooking adventure. I’ll definitely post several recipes I already know and love but I plan to use this blog to experiment with new recipes and different foods as well. Since I’m fairly new to cooking, I’m sure I will make a few messes and end up with some funky tasting final products, but that’s what cooking is all about, right?

Thanks for visiting and I hope you can get as much out of reading my posts as I get out of writing them (and eating them, of course).

Bravo! You are very funny!

I just tried the egg and oatmeal today and it was delicious. More hearty than my usual oatmeal and raisins. I can’t wait for what’s next!

This is the most amazing blog I have ever read! Great writing, beautiful, smart young lady. Of course I could be slightly biased.
